Not only an antique but one with antique views about comfort. At first glance one imagines that a large area of leather (and in some cases, the addition of springs) will lead to a more congenial relationship between the rider's backside and the machinery he wishes to propel. It works - but only for short journeys. However once distances in excess of fifty miles are contemplated, the cumulative effects of friction create a sensation equivalent to sitting in an operative frying-pan. Take a look at the riders in the TdF; they support themselves on a horizontal bracket no longer, no wider than a thickish felt-tip pen.

It seems Auden was wrong:

About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters;

And I have personal testimony.
