the loved one came home from the library with alberto manguel's "the library at night" and tentatively enquired if it might interest me ... not realizing that i had relished and devoured his "history of reading" when it was published not so long ago ... i couldn't begin to explain my delight and gratitude ... just skimming the bibliography makes me weak at the knees !
Having read the History of Reading and responded as you did, I can understand your feelings.

How far have you got? On my third re-reading, I am only a third of the way through. My first reading, frequently interrupted, took at least five years.
ReplyDeletepage five hundred and something in volume four, The Fugitive ... Albertine has just "died" and the chauffeur, Aime, has been sent back to Balbec to make enquiries about her past ... his discoveries are in his letter, which has just arrived ...
