built to last ... with identical twin lady doctors ?
the one on the left appears to be holding a poppy seed-head ... source of pain-killing medicines then and now
the one on the right is probably holding a kind of straight stethoscope ( usually made of glass ) used by obstetricians to listen to the baby's heartbeat
i believe the hospitals in those days were heavily supported by private donations, and that such idealised figures might possibly have attracted a certain kind of idealist
