burt lancaster and nick cravat in the crimson pirate ... the dvd is out in the uk

of course it is rubbish, most of the acting and the script are lamentable ... but its the kind of rubbish small boys like me would have loved to watch in the sevenpenny seats at the athelstan cinema in malmesbury on a saturday afternoon in about 1957 ... and i'm always willing to watch burt making the most out of any role ... have you seen the leopard, or trapeze ?

What about 'The Train'?! All grainy and gritty and black and white even though it was made as late as 1964?

While checking the facts on this, I discovered Burt was also in a film version, which I've not seen, of Shaw's 'Devil's Disciple', which I adored when I did it for O level. Apparently the film wasn't much cop, and thinking back the play probably wasn't either...

He's been in a lot of films hasn't he?

Oh how strange are the coincidences of blogging; I'm just sorting the papers & photos of my uncle who was a stunt horseman; he was master of horse on the Devil's Disciple and I found a signed photo of Burt with a nice dedication which I must post sometime. He was a great guy, as illustrated here: http://www.patriciascott.org/winding/2005_02_01_month.php#110929658834890198.

'The Train' is probably my favourite non-western Burt movie...but he is awesome in 'Castle Keep', 'the Swimmer', 'The Sweet smell of success', and, of course, 'Elmer Gantry'....none of these are a patch on Burt in 'The Scalphunters', 'Lawman', 'The professionals'...and above all, 'Ulzana's Raid'....
