after georgeyboy commented on the russell "ten commandments" i dug in to some boxes of ancient scrapbooks ... not being a trained historian, i didn't retain the marginalia and am unable to say when and where these images came from, but it was probably the sunday times in the early seventies, perhaps the photographer was snowdon, i wish someone would tell me
as for scrapbooks, if your memory was as woolly and moth-eaten as mine ...

Which reminds of what might have been Bilious Bertie's last radio interview...he was into his nineties, and the interview moved to his flirtation with the Bloomsbury Group...he was asked about meeting with DH Lawrence.."Yes, i might Lawrence...a very intense young man with a bristling moustache...and he spent some time going on at me about some idea of his about what he kept calling 'blood consciousness'...I listened for a while...and then thought to myself...'what arrant nonsense..."...!!
